Cayuga Blue

Cayuga Blue, original artwork by Mike Geno

I was so glad to finally meet Pete Messmer and his dad Steve when they stopped by my studio while in town on cheese business. I had been wanting to get my hands on some of this delicious blue and when Pete stacked two quarters of a wheel on my desk, I knew I had to paint it just like that.

Cayuga Blue is an intentionally mild goat milk blue cheese made in the finger lakes region of New York by Lively Run Dairy. The Messners family run farm is one of the longest operating commercial goat dairies in the country. This award winning blue is hearty and sweet, and reminiscent of Portabello mushrooms with a slight grassiness. I find it to be somewhat bright, fresh and sweet too. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, but the taste had me committed for a long term relationship.
