Niederegger Marzipan

Niederegger Marzipan, original artwork by Mike Geno

I have had little interaction with marzipan until this very delicious painting commission.

Marzipan is a confection made primarily of sugar, or honey, and almond meal (ground almonds). It often comes covered in chocolate or even decoratively shaped and colored as fruits and vegetables. Its used in baking and as stand-alone candy treats. It is found throughout the world and there's dispute of it's origin but many believe it was introduced to Eastern Europe through the Turks. My patron specifically requested Niederegger Marzipan, made in Lubeck, Germany with a proud marzipan tradition.

The exploration of foil and chocolate in paint was especially fun for me and incredibly tasty as I had to buy extras, y'know, just in case. I love that about commissions; often they introduce me to new life-long friends.
