vacation-log:
the visual archive of
"what I did on my summer vaction".
STATEMENT:
This series of drawings was created
while I travelled through Italy, Paris and the UK. It was
a means to document what I saw and experienced and to relate to the touristy
trade of
POST CARDS - an international industry of kitsch.
I decided that if I made my own cheesy postcards, rather than buy them, it
would offer me
the opportunity to enjoy each location on another level and break up the monotony
of sight-seeing.
Also my goal was to motivate myself to produce something that I could share
with others during
my 5 weeks away from my studio...
That, and I needed a good excuse NOT to have to shop for gifts for all my
family and friends
which is painful in comparison.
My surfaces [heavily sized & primed 4x6" handmade
paper] were prepared before my trip and the media
used on them was limited to what I initially brought with me [pencils,
pens, sharpies and gouache]
and what I was able to find in the few stationary stores I came across.
One of my best finds was a "9-T-9
cents" store in Florence where I purchased an assortment of
very serious metalic gel pens and white-out markers!
(nothing classys up a work of art like shiney metalic pens that smudge and
drip with inconsistancy)
I made a point of mailing each postcard from the city it was created in when
possible.
* this page will soon
contain the entire collection of which you
(or perhaps someone you know) is a part owner of.
