Le Chevrot

oil on wood, 10x10"

Le Chevrot by Mike Geno

I discovered this "unquestionably superb goat’s milk cheese" considered a "French Masterpiece" as a result of a friend pining over her childhood memories. As an unpasteurized cheese it's difficult to get in the USA with strict rules and restrictions. My friend buys this and ignores the quick use-by date and ages it herself to later relive a strong flavored memory of her French childhood.

The wrinkly/brainy rind was definitely one of the attractions for me, as well as one of the biggest challenges to paint. I cut it in half, then sliced off a few bites for myself so the smaller half lays face down, offering a view of that complicated rind.
